So, make sure that you properly check a perfume before using it, as well as you also need to be particular with minute symptoms that can result from prolonged exposure to certain chemical contents of perfumes. Here is some of the key information that you should know about perfume allergies. Take note that health comes first before anything else. What is Perfume Allergy?Allergy is a condition that can happen to almost anyone. Studies show that in North America alone, an estimated 50 million experience different kinds of allergic conditions that also include perfume allergy.Allergy is a health state is described as an exaggerated (hypersensitive) reaction that the immune system launches against certain chemicals or allergens. Usually, these chemicals do not produce any symptoms when used by other people but in some cases the immune system recognizes it as foreign substance thus one part of the system triggers allergic reactions. Some of the well known allergens include foods, molds, dust mite, pollens, dander and perfume. To understand why allergy occurs only to some people, you need to take in mind the diverse differences in human genetics and body structures. In fact, some can exhibit life threatening symptoms for a certain chemical while others can tolerate it fairly well. You need to be aware of which substances you are allergic to as well what factors precipitates an allergic attack. Broadly speaking, perfume allergy is an allergy on all products that contain fragrance and can cause allergic reactions. This can be in the form of perfume, deodorant, cosmetic products, household products, industrial sprays, and other substances with fragrance. Fragrance is defined as anything that evokes certain pleasurable reactions to our sense of smell. You can be allergic with some perfumes but not with others. If this is the case you might want to check out the list of ingredients and evaluate which one appears to be the culprit. Some experience seasonal perfume allergies which seem to be affected by the skin's reactions to the chemical content of a perfume. This is especially true during summer season when it is most likely for sweat to create a chemical reaction once it combines with the perfume. For some, perfume allergy can appear as transient episodes and resolves all by itself. You may have this kind of allergy when you tested a perfume for the first time and develops symptoms immediately. Usually, your immune system only needs to familiarize itself with the perfume ingredients of the perfume. Once you have started using it, the system recognizes it not as foreign substances and the symptoms will gradually disappear. When the body considers a certain fragrance as offensive, it creates a series of symptoms that will eventually compound bringing in adverse health implications. Some will even develop acute situations that require immediate medical attention. While these cases are extremely rare, it would still be best to prevent it from happening by being aware of the early symptoms of perfume allergy. Differentiating Perfume AllergiesOf the different kinds of allergies on record, perfume allergy belongs to the most common forms of contact allergy in adults. This is due to the fact that there are literally thousands of perfumes with varying ingredients that we come in contact to almost everywhere and every day. Perfume has become part of our society and it's hard to get away from it.Allergy or hypersensitivity to perfumes can be categorized as either direct contact allergy, indirect contact allergy or both. These differentiations depend on when you start to experience allergic symptoms. Some demonstrate allergic reactions once a fragrance sticks to their olfactory senses while others react to the chemicals that come in contact with their skin. Between these two evils, direct contact allergy proves to be more favorable because it can be prevented by avoiding the perfume. On the other hand, indirect contact allergy tends to develop regardless of who is wearing the perfume. Maybe you have just found yourself beside a lady with a heady perfume and soon you'll start sneezing and feeling nauseous. These unexpected and often unavoidable events can predispose you to allergic attacks, something that you are not to be blamed. The third category is probably the worst type because it prevents you from enjoying the scent of perfumes. You can't wear as much as you need to avoid smelling it. The difference between these two forms of perfume allergy is also apparent with the symptoms. Direct contact allergy develops into eczema, wheals, rashes and itchiness. Usually, it takes a couple of minutes for these skin reactions to appear. Indirect contact allergy often results in acute symptoms that include chest congestion, dizziness, sneezing, asthma or even fainting. For some, these symptoms tend to develop gradually, while for others with overly hypersensitive immune system it can develop in an instant. It is not unlikely to experience a combination of symptoms as the immune system works singularly. Typically all of the immune responses are released once there is a foreign body. This makes it very common for the symptoms to be demonstrated hand in hand. Prevent Perfume AllergyTo effectively prevent the development of acute allergic reactions, you need to pay attention with the subtle symptoms of perfume allergy. If you experience slight symptoms of perfume allergy, you must immediately consult your doctor for a diagnosis. This is done through test strips or patches that contain the basic element of the perfume. Once you are diagnosed as allergic to perfume then you need to make sure that you won't come in contact with it. Check everything that you buy and always choose hypoallergenic perfumes. If you want to wear perfume, you can choose also the weaker perfume concentrations; e.g. Eau de Toilette (EDT) over Eau de Parfum (EDP) as it can be worn on clothes. Beforedoing so be sure to discuss it with your doctor. Be sure that every time you buy a perfume you check its contents to determine whether it contains any noxious ingredients. For people prone to indirect contact allergic attacks, you must always bring with some medications usually antihistamines to prevent the problem from aggravating. The material provided on this page is for the information and educational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical treatment or diagnosis.
